Taste it Again / Lost & Found

On occasion, I’ll take a wine I like and put it away in a “special box” for a few years to see how it will age … below you will read happened to those wines. On the other hand, there are wines that get “lost” in my wine cellar with nary a review ever written - some have turned into golden Treasures, others supreme Trash and then there are those that fall somewhere in-between (Tolerable). We’ll look at those here too. (New wines are being added all the time so keep coming back):

Lost & Found: Daniel Lenko 2002 Meritage

05 Dec 2014

Found September 2014

Word of my older Ontario tastings has spread, now it seems others are interested in spotlighting older Ontario wines, but nothing beats an original, and that's why it makes sense that I got together with Danny Lenko to taste one of his older wines ... Surprisingly he has quite a few back vintages on his shelves at the back of his "store".  Today he allowed me to pick from his vast selection saying "pick whatever you like, I'm proud of all of them and wouldn't be selling it if I thought it was bad".  I chose the 2002 Meritage; one of Ontario's great vintages of the early 2000s.  There is a hint of green pepper on this one, but if you look past that you'll find lovely fruit, a la cassis, dried raspberry, and black cherry - nothing fresh but with good tannin structure, this wine shows a ballsiness, especially for its age - it's a wine I would not be embarrassed to put on my table, hence why Daniel still has it on his shelf ... Thanks for sharing Daniel.  Lost & Found Rating:  Treasure

(September 27, 2014) ... This is the third time I have written a taste it again report on this wine:  October 2008; February 2011 and now (September 2014) ... the real question is how well is this hot vintage red aging?  Well I'm about to tell you.  Last time out it was the nose of this wine that was giving me trouble - I'm glad to report that that issue might have been bottle variance or just the wine going thorough some kind of weird or dumb phase.  This time around the nose was rather forthcoming with good smells, like dried raspberry and anise.  The flavours proved to be a tad earthy with notes of cassis and dried blackberry.  The finish was smooth, mellow and slightly herbal with an anise linger.  I suspect it is now time to drink the last two bottles of this wine I have in my cellar as I doubt they will be getting any better.  If you have any in your cellar I would suggest doing the same.
