An Odd Array (Ontario / South Africa / California / Australia / Washington)

14 Aug 2018

(December 4, 2016) ... I think the title puts it best here as an odd array of wines hit the table tonight - a night with no theme at all:

Trius 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (Ontario) ... I expected little from this 7 year old Savvy B but instead got a whole lot of great presence in the glass: lanolin and grapefruit zest reigned supreme and this wine still felt lovely and fresh on the palate.

Lomond 2005 Syrah (SouthAfrica) ... This wine has all kinds of memories behind it and so I opened my last bottle with trepidation, hoping it was still good. Nice peppery dried fruit, with some cassis and licorice notes backing it all up - quite happy with this one, and I think it was even better than the last bottle I opened.

Renwood 2004 ""Old Vines" Zinfandel (California) ... I love Zin and can always find something interesting in an old bottle - at 12 years this wine still seems like a wonderful drink to me with minty, peppery, and cherry-cola.

Bonneyview Wines 2003 Basket Press, Shiraz - Petit Verdot (Australia) ... this was probably the weakest of the bottles opened, and the oldest, the fruit was gone and instead we were left with pepper, spice, and cedar, and even the wood notes that it was giving off were drying out very quickly.

Chateau Ste Michelle 2008 Meritage (Washington) ... this one started out slowly, giving off an odd mushroom quality that I was not to happy with, but with a little air and a little time out popped cocoa and rich dark cherry, but there was still some harsh tannins that followed and maybe they will never resolve themselves (they did not for us) - but I sure hope they do.
