Vernaccia San Gimignano 2018: Good Better Best

16 Feb 2018

(February 14, 2018) ... SAN GIMIGNANO – This year’s Anteprime schedule started with Chianti (in Florence) and moved along though San Gimignano, Montepulciano and Montalcino, but this year I start with the Vernaccia wines of San Gimignano. As usual with these Anteprime I never score unfinished wines (barrel samples) so I rate them on potential (good / better / best).

________________________

The grape is white and it is called Vernaccia – the only true white wine region of the “Anteprime di Toscana” and 2017 seemed to be a scattershot of wines that showed good to better potential with none showing that really vibrant best potential (granted I only had one in that category last year). Those that made the grade were fresh and lively; I like these wines when the acidity shines through and the flavours recall lanolin, citrus, and beeswax, even hints of melon and pineapple can be found.  This year my top wineries were Fattorie Melini (2 scored wines), Panizzi (2 scored wines); Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara (1 scored; 2 with “better” potential); and Mormoraia (2 wines with potential).

As mentioned above, I do not score unfinished wines, too much can go wrong between tank / barrel and bottle that can compromise or otherwise change the wine that I have I tried as a “sample”. In San Gimignano there were a lot of unfinished wines that showed quite a bit of potential … at the very bottom of the page are finished wines, fully scored.

Wines of Lisbon (Lisboa) Portugal – Day 3 & 4

14 Feb 2018

Throughout our visit of producers both large and small, we saw everything from Syrah to Castelao; learned about sparkling wines that rival some of the best outside (and sacrilegiously) inside Champagne; found Port-style whites aged 7 and 15 years in oak, learned of a unique grapes grown only in the town of Oeires – and tasted some under $15 wines (available in Ontario) that you should run right out and buy … like now.
