(June 16, 2017) ... I'm looking at two Ontario Chardonnays one is just 6 years old the other 9 ... In truth my threshold for Chardonnay is more around the 7 year mark, after that they get too funky for my taste ... But I have been surprised by a few - is this one of those times?
Inniskillin 2011 Montague Vineyard Chardonnay ... Now of the two wines this is the one I was positive would have been the better of the two - it's younger, hence "fresher" and more approachable, right? Nope: the nose was full of burnt and oxidized butter and burnt sugar, there was no fruit on the wine; could the taste save it? Nope again: oxidized, burnt apple, bitter note and really hard to drink.
Coyote's Run 2008 Black Paw Chardonnay ... This wine surprised the hell out of me, 3 years older and 300% better (also under screwcap), aromas are where they should be, buttery and smoky while the palate carries that smoky note along with buttery-dried-apple-and-peach, and it is still a deliciously drinkable wine, I still think 7 years is my cut-off but this does make a case for even older Chardonnay (under screwcap?).
