From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Nine North Wine Company 2005 Hullabaloo Zinfandel (California)

Hullabaloo 2005 Zin

(April 12, 2017) ... I tried one throw-away wine earlier in the evening (Chateau des Charmes 2010 Gamay Noir Droit) so I thought I'd push my luck with this 12 year old Hullabaloo Zinfandel, and yes lightning did strike twice:  spiced plum and blackberry take charge from beginning to end, it's simple but still quite nice and easy to drink.

Finca El Retiro 2004 Reserva Especial Tempranillo (Argentina)

Finca El Retiro 2004 Tempranillo

(June 18, 2016) ... This double edged sword of a wine started out very alcoholic and harsh with earthy and cedary spices, it was hard to get passed the first few sips ... but it's 12 years old so I let it sit open, I even made the attempt to decant it a little, and wouldn't ya know it came back to life:  plum, cassis, and black cherry began to dominate with the earthy-dreary note taking a backseat and it developed a nice spicy kick on the finish ... fresh and lively? No. Better than originally thought? You bet.
