From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Tom Gore 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (California)

Tom Gore 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon

(December 22, 2017) ... Until a few weeks prior to tasting this wine I had never heard of Tom Gore (Frank Gore yes) ... My thoughts were, where has this wine been all my life? A juicy California number for under $20, and I hear you saying "they are a dime a dozen", but I'm not talking the sweet versions, this one is juicy yet has a serious side. The fruit reigns supreme here with aromas of black raspberry and subtle mocha ... This follows onto the palate adding hints of vanilla and a long black fruit finish.

Lazy Bones Franc & Substantial Cabernet (California / Washington)

Lazy Bones Franc

(December 19, 2017) ... Tonight I pulled out two from the US ... Starting with this Central Coast Wine Warehouse 2015 Lazy Bones Cabernet Franc, as a fan of single variety Cabernet Franc, mainly from Ontario, I always like to see other regions take on the grape. This California, Paso Robles, version has fairly aggressive tannins along with spiced plum, cassis, black raspberry, and leaves a fuzzy feeling on the tongue.

Next up, a Washington Cab, Wines of Substance 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, this was a really lovely juicy number in its youth, not that it's so old now, but with some time in bottle it has settled down a bit delivering earthy, spiced-plum, graphite, sour cherry and smoke; it also seems a little drier than the previous juicy incarnation I tried.
