From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Double the Fun of France

(August 30, 2015) ... A "grab and go dinner", which basically means it was impromptu at someone else's house, so I rushed down to the cellar, grabbed a couple of wines and went out the door. Times like this I take pictures of labels on the fly, or sereptiously at the destination, notes are taken via phone and I look rather rude, but my wife has learned to apologize for my "rudeness" well.

First bottle was of French origins (as it turns out both were) ... Castel Oualou 2007 a wine that barely shows its age with its smooth entry, luxurious black raspberry, tobacco, and sweet cherry; but the finish is not as exciting, it's a little funky at times and takes on a seemingly metallic aftertaste.

Time to open bottle number two - Cazes 2005 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour L'Excellence de Trinia. Aromas of black licorice, smoke and mocha; flavours are just as appealing with raspberry, licorice, mocha, dried cherry, and spice. As the night wore on hints of spearmint and cocoa begin to show themselves - hands down the better bottle.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild 2007 Carmenere Reserva

(August 28, 2015) ... After my Laura's Red verticle I dragged out an older Chilean wine for dinner and to act as a comparison wine ... This 8 year old wine was a pretty good little foil to those Ontario wines. As with many Chilean wines this one kicks off with a minty note, mostly on the nose, palate proves to be rather smooth with blackberry, cassis, a little smoke and hints of pepper with an extremely pleasant finish.
