From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Concha y Toro 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Marques de Casa Concha (Chile)

14 Apr 2019

CyT 2009 Cab Sauv Marques(March 3, 2019) ... About a month ago I had a Concha y Toro that was a little past its prime from the exact same year as this Marques de Casa Concha, which is why I wanted to open this wine and see where it was in its evolution, and the one word that past my lips was "wow", this wine was so far from being past it was almost fresh - I even had a friend who was over for dinner take a sip, we looked at each other with surprise and awe and then she didn't relinquish the glass for the rest of the night ... what a total beauty this one is with chocolate, black licorice, black cherry, blackberry and hints of vanilla - it was still fresh and lively with good acidity and silky tannins backing it all up.

Tapestry 2009 BG&V Shiraz (Australia)

Tapestry 2009

(January 29, 2019) ... There's something about some of these old Australian Shirazes that really are my jam - sometimes when they are young they can be a little jammy and a little sweet, but if you can find one that has the tannins and acid to back them up then you're in for a treat as it ages. This one has the sub-text of Baker's Gully & Vignerons vineyard, which gives us the place it is from in the McLaren Vale ... now at 10 years of age there are so many layers to discover: eucalyptus, spice , blackberry and cherry, then there's smoky, earthy and meaty notes that lie under all that great fruit ... there are also definitive hits of red and black pepper, raspberry and spiced-cocoa on the finish ... Tannins are still aggressive but show signs of mellowing into silkiness as it rests in the glass. And as it sits it also develops a little cocoa on the nose. Plenty of complexity here that seems to hang on for the duration of the evening - and that bodes well for the future of this wine surviving another decade.
