From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

The Show 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (California)

05 Jan 2017

(May 17, 2016) ... After tasting the 2008 Cave Spring Riesling we moved on to a big red from California, not sure what I expected from this Cab with the showy label but it started off pretty good with aromas of plum, prune, blackberry, and black cherry; the palate has a real smoothness to it loaded with blackberry, vanilla, and a gentle grittiness. Right off the hop it was a tasty wine; but as the evening wore on it became less and less attractive; air is definitely not this wine's friend so drink up quick.

Henry's Drive 2007 Pillar Box Red (Australia)

04 Jan 2017

(May 15, 2016) ... I've been picking up some 2007 wines out of the cellar, both from Ontario and around the world, tonight it's an Australian that hits the bottom of my glass.  This Pillar Box Red is a blend of Shiraz (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) & Merlot (10%) ... the nose offered up aromas of black licorice and black cherry, while the palate showed off smoked-plum and pepper; the finish held firmly onto the 15% alcohol and came across boozy with spiced raspberry backing.

If you can get passed the big, booziness of the wine then it is still quite lovely, but if you're one of those that can pick up alcohol readily, and it offends you, this might not be the wine for you.
