Taste it Again / Lost & Found

On occasion, I’ll take a wine I like and put it away in a “special box” for a few years to see how it will age … below you will read happened to those wines. On the other hand, there are wines that get “lost” in my wine cellar with nary a review ever written - some have turned into golden Treasures, others supreme Trash and then there are those that fall somewhere in-between (Tolerable). We’ll look at those here too. (New wines are being added all the time so keep coming back):

Lost & Found: Jackson-Triggs 2011 Delaine Syrah

Jackson Triggs 2011 Delaine Syrah

(June 18, 2016) ... Look, I'm not going to beat around the bush here, I'm a fan of the Delaine Syrah, it's a good wine no matter what the vintage.  2011 looked like it might be disastrous  for Syrah, but instead the Delaine version proved me wrong again; so now, 5 years from vintage date, and this wine is still going strong: savoury and meaty, though it has lost some of its spicy zing; now it's smooth and easy and a great pairing with steak because that acidity helps right the palate.

Taste it Again: Vineland 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon - non-VQA

04 Sep 2017

Vineland 2003 non-VQA Cab Sauv

(June 14, 2016) ... I misidentified this wine during a podcast taping of Two Guys Talking Wine as one made from Washington grapes during a short crop season; in speaking with (winemaker at Vineland) Brian Schmidt much later I found out the grapes were actually from Bulgaria - I must have been thinking of a Willow Heights wine from the same year.

Plenty of forest floor notes here, dried but drinkable, with Port-like nuances (yet only 13% alcohol); strawberry-balsamic and black cherry fruit leather are also lying in the weeds, this wine is more of a curiosity than anything at this moment.
