From the Cellar

Just because I started a website called OntarioWineReview.com doesn't mean it's All-Ontario-All-the-Time. When I kick back at night my mood (and sometimes my curiosity) decides my wine of choice. And the title should read, "Uncorked and Un-Screwed Tonight" ... but that just sounds wrong.

Dinner at Sue's (Ontario / Argentina / Australia)

27 Sep 2018

(January 27, 2017) ... Four wines opened tonight, we always start with bubbles but then we moved on to some rather interesting older wines from 2008 and 2005 ... JT Brut 2010

Jackson-Triggs 2010 Entourage Brut - Ontario ... This was the year there was some unintended colour in the brut, making it more rose then what one would expect from a wine marked simply as "brut"; the wine was lively and fresh on the nose with pronounced raspberry & strawberry aromas, the palate proved to be a little more earthier but still with pleasant strawberry lime flavours.

3 wines at Sue'sLa Posta 2008 Malbec, Pizzella Family Vineyard - Argentina ... Man did I want this wine to shine, the nose was good: blueberry, mocha, and spice, but the palate let me down: earthy, spicy, flat, and flabby; a real "meh" wine and the lack of fruit was such a let down.

Thorn-Clarke 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Terra Barrosa - Australia ... This wine over delivered at 8 years of age. Aromas of raspberry, plum, and sweet cherry, those all followed onto the palate  and layered in so much more: lush dark and red fruit, vanilla, cherry, and a hint of chocolate. This more than made up for the lackluster Malbec.

Trius 2005 Red - Ontario ... Great vintages sometimes offer up great disappointments, especially when you expect so much from those wines; here smoky and earthy notes take hold, sure it was smooth on the palate but the lack of any fruit brought the whole bottle down.

Christmas Night 2016 (Argentina / France / Italy)

14 Sep 2018

(December 25, 2016) ... We spend the morning with my in-laws and the night with my brother; I pulled out some interesting stuff like:

ChakanaChakana 2009 Bonarda, Yaguerete Collection (Argentina) ... I love Bonarda, it's the Gamay of Argentina: light, fruity, easy drinking, but it has to be made well; this one was. Dark berry fruit, touch of oxidization from the plastic cork but there is nice spice and blueberry, with hints of Christmas spice - one of the few plastic corked wines I've liked, but I drank my glass pretty fast because it was aging too quickly for my liking.

Domaine Boudau 2008 Le Clos (France) ... It has aged beautifully but has dropped a lot of fruit along the way: smoky and spicy, with some cassis and tobacco on the finish.

TorreVento 2006 Torre del Falco Nero di Troia (Italy) ... The grape is Nero di Troia and I have had little to no exposure to it until tonight, but after tasting this 10 year old wine I might be a fan (need more to say for certain): black licorice, cedar, smoke and black cherry - no way you would guess these grapes grew a decade ago.

Masi 2006 Campofiorin (Italy) ... You don't get to see 5-star vintages often and Masi is tougher than most when doling them out, you can see why they did it in 2006, even with 10 years on it the wine still feels fresh and lively: mocha, black cherry, cigar box, and very smooth.
